On Wednesday evening Murray Anderson-Wallace was commended by the Medical Journalists Association (MJA) for his film “Beth’s Story”. Murray was one of three finalists for the MJA Winter Awards in the investigative reporting / broadcast category and was up against stiff competition from Fergus Walsh (BBC News Health Correspondent) and Matthew Hill (BBC Points West Health Correspondent), who was the eventual winner.

The category was judged by Branwen Jeffreys (BBC News), Nick Timmins (Financial Times and former MJA Health Journalist of the Year) and Andy Coghlan (New Scientist).

On commending the Murray’s work the judges said “This is a harrowing 15 minute face to camera account of a relatively routine operation that went terribly wrong – narrated by Bethany’s mother Clare Bowen – and of how appallingly the NHS and the coroner’s system dealt with the consequences. Give that there is only one voice and no balancing one from the hospital or medics involved you could question whether this is a piece of campaigning rather than of pure journalism. But either way it is a remarkable piece of film by Murray Anderson-Wallace. We’d urge you to see it. It is immensely powerful and lives on in the memory long after viewing”

Murray said of the commendation “We are delighted to have been commended by the MJA. This film is first and foremost, a testament to the courage and determination of the Bowen family and in particular to Clare Bowen, Beth’s mum who continues to use her families tragic experience to create constructive cultural change – she is an inspiration. I am also indebted to my colleague Roland Denning with whom I made this film. The quality of his film-making – a hallmark of all our work together -was commented on by the judges and deserves due credit”

Murray Anderson-Wallace has been shortlisted for an award from the Medical Journalists Association in the investigative / broadcast category for “Beth’s Story“, a documentary film that he produced and co-directed in 2011 as part of his work with www.patientstories.org.uk

This moving and challenging documentary tells the story of the Bowen family following the tragic death of their daughter, Bethany during ‘routine’ surgery. Following the trauma of his daughter’s death and the ‘torture’ of the inquest, Richard Bowen died suddenly of a massive heart attack aged 31 years.

Through Clare Bowen’s testimony, the film offers professionals the opportunity to explore the multiple ‘human factors’ that lead to Beth’s untimely death and to re-examine their own ideas and practice in relation to serious harm in the healthcare context. Clare’s remarkable courage and humanity in the face of extreme tragedy is the hallmark of this powerful and provocative film.

Ultimately, this film is another step in Clare’s search for truth and reconciliation.

The final winner will be announced on the 25th January 2012 at the Kings Fund in Central London.

Building on early advice and support to NHS Quest we are now working closely with this member convened network of NHS Trusts to help strengthen and develop cross boundary collaboration and learning.

NHS Quest is a member-led network that aims to enable Foundation Trusts to aspire to a level of excellence in quality and safety that is beyond all current expectations.

It aims to deliver this through a new model of working for collaborative improvement for NHS Providers. Instead of clustering around traditional geographical boundaries, Quest member organisations have committed to networking with a defined group of like-minded organisations across England in pursuit of a strategic focus and a set of shared ambitions around safety and quality, positioning these as their core business strategy.

Importantly, Quest is not centrally–initiated or led. Its membership model has the potential to create a distributed model of power and leadership that foregrounds both individual and collective benefit and the development of social capital within a community of practice.

Previous attempts to improve, share and learn across organisational boundaries[1] in the NHS have taught us that transformational impact at an organisational scale is more likely when ambitious programmes of improvement are combined with active attempts to network within and across executive, clinical leadership and frontline levels[2].

In the longer term NHS Quest also aims to develop its voice as an advocate for policies and practices that support its aims and develop a dialogue with local and national commissioners based on its learning and insights.

[1] McKinsey Hospital Institute, The Health Roundtable (England), The Health Foundation’s Safer Patients Network, the NHS Institute’s Leading Improvement in Patient Safety (LIPS) and Patient Safety First

[2] The aspiration is to create connections vertically and horizontally both internal and externally.
